UpMarket June

UpMarket is fast becoming a monthly must-happen for me....just like other things in my life like waxing, parking fees (I lie, the streets of POS are my parking lot) and the crimson flower (ha, so many corny euphemisms for that menstrual shiz). Except it's not nearly as horrible as any of those other events I just mentioned.
UpMarket is a breath of fresh air for me, amidst all the .com shopping and the busy, smelly streets of Port of Spain (I don't shop in West Mall...everything there is dull and overpriced, and all other malls are too inaccessible to me on the weekend).
Housed in the Woodbrook Community Centre on O'Connor St. on roughly the first weekend of every month, it's a utopia for anyone seeking a different kind of shopping. I've been to two to date and both times it's been a total sell out. The demographic to which it caters is diverse and holistic - from children to young adults to the middle aged to the elderly (of course the kids are being dragged along by the middle aged, but they don't seem to mind - there's ice-cream for heaven's sake!)
Fresh flowers, gourmet pepper sauce and chutneys, natural cosmetics and toiletries, cupcakes and home-made ice creams in all kinds of non-traditional flavours, jewellery (which of course we all know is my main reason for going there) both local, original creations, and your standard mass-produced jewellery that's being re-sold. There's also clothing but less so; the real attraction for me is the food, and the jewellery.

Designs by Nadia at UpMarket
My Roma St. Prix acquisition
In tandem with Designs by Nadia, which is a St. Lucia-based designer who came down especially to sell at UpMarket, there was a lady by the name of Roma St. Prix selling these beautiful hand-painted white cotton shirts. I fell in love with them, because they were exactly the kind of easy breezy aesthetic that island-fashion is inextricably linked to. I'm all for a little cliche every now and then, so I bought one for my mom, and then I decided to get myself one as well. A little pricier than something I would normally buy but I didn't mind because it's 'local' (I consider up-the-island artisans local too, CSME nugga!)
I can't remember the exact name of the label...Soleil something...will edit when I get back home and can check the tag.

BetchBum at UpMarket
One designer to note is there every month. Denise Hendrie's macrame jewellery is statement jewellery. I first encountered her at Chez Nous in December and since then I've only been able to find her at UpMarket. Seems like she works mostly with hemp and raffia and most if not all of the beads you see intertwined throughout her pieces are hand-made as well.

I also had a serious addiction to Cuptails Cookies & Cream cupcakes, so much so that I actually went back later in the day to get more. The Sangria cupcake was also a thing to behold. I love the idea and I like the fact that it actually tastes good, even though you would think a vodka cupcake might be a little...hmmm....questionable. It isn't. It's G*d-damn delicious.
My second box of Cuptails, all Cookies & Cream
So therein lies my visit to UpMarket. They are also having an event in South on July 21st at a location called the Oasis. Follow UpMarket on Facebook for more information.

Koko Karibi

Heading to Meiling's 24 Hours Fashion Show

Black button up from H&M, Doris & Doris Pants, Koko Karibi Choker, Beids by Chuff earrings, Zara Pumps

Heading to UpMarket, Rob being silly behind me
F21 Maxi Dress, Koko Karibi Choker, Beids by Chuff earrings, Asos ring, Anne Klein watch, purse from Bang Bang

As you can probably tell (because you're observant like that), this Koko Karibi Choker is my truth...I've been wearing it every opportunity I get. It's intricate without being overwhelming and detailed enough to be interesting.

I have also been rocking these smaller 'Tumbleweed' earrings from Koko Karibi. They're small enough for work but unusual enough for me to not feel like I'm wearing anything out of my comfort zone (ie, boring).

So check out the Facebook page. She recently launched a new collection called Landscapes, which I am yet to see, but I'm sure it's just as gorgeous as all her other work. Koko Karibi is also usually featured at the Monthly Arts Market in Belmont. Hit me up for details.

Philosophy...is the talk on a cereal box

:: source ::

Was trawling the depths of the internet today - no, I was actually just on 9Gag - and found these great posters of philosophical quotes. Particularly love the one by Camus. Going to print it out and put it up in my cubicle so I can keep raging against the machine in my own quiet way. God I hate my job. Anyway! Hope you enjoy these as much as I do. The artist is Max Temkin and he's got great work on his website.

Look for Less

Hello lovelies, I decided to do the good Samaritan thing today and share the spoils of my persistent trolling of online retail outlets...

Today I'll just point out two must-have trendy items that you can actually secure through accessible online retailers (they accept our credit cards and ship to P.O. Boxes) for a minute fraction of the cost of the real deal.

Prada Baroque Sunnies
REAL
Available at Nordstrom for US$290.00

DEAL
Available at Amazon for US$9.99

Jeffrey Campbell Night Walk
REAL
Available at Solestruck for US$169.95

DEAL
Available at Go Jane for US$34.00

Hey look at that...I'm finding you ways to save money. Assuming you were obligated to ever spend that money in the first place (which you most certainly were not). But let's be real, everyone loves a deal, and everyone loves copping merchandise 'inspired by' a designer that we simply cannot afford (if only on principle).

Happy shopping!

Latest Buy

Check out the swanky ass pants I just bought (yesterday). I plan on doing some shopping this weekend at Chez Nous Accessories Show so I will be posting a haul at some point next week. Hopefully...if I find amazing things, which I'm sure I will. But I'm super excited about these pants/leggings. Obsessed with the print. And they're magic pants because they looked so tiny on the hanger but when I put them on they actually fit...amazing! Might just be part of my Le Brunch ensemble.

Chez Nous Presents...

Chez Nous is back y'all!

Chez Nous is a must-go-to event that's held sporadically every few months, that features fantastic local (and sometimes foreign-based) vendors. The next installment is one that literally has me writhing with excitement (seriously, I'm practically frothing at the mouth), since you may have gathered I'm something of an accessory-phile (I'm a grade-A addict).

The following vendors will be in attendance:

  • Janice Derrick
  • Lupe Leonard
  • Meiling (a Chez Nous staple)
  • The Art of Fabric
  • Rachel Rochford
  • Sandalias Apparel Ltd.
  • Kenneth Forde
  • Thais & Rejane
  • Immortelle Beauty (another Chez Nous regular)
  • Crystal Cunningham
  • Rachel St. Rose
  • Beids by Chuff
  • Antonia Fifi

Now I know some of these vendors, and some I will be encountering for the first time. Pay day is tomorrow and I will be withdrawing quite a bit to spend at Chez Nous. I know the value of a totally unique, amazing accessory and how it can complete an ensemble. There is something incredibly empowering about owning an article of jewellery that is not only local, but one of a kind...it becomes you, and it becomes part of your signature style. I may be waxing poetic, but try it and see what I mean. And to me, the best thing about buying local is that there is never any buyer's remorse :) See you guys there!

Gone over to the Light Side

Bye Bye Old Faithful

Well I’ve done it…I’ve taken the leap. I am a Blackberry user no more.

I’m not sure what made me decide to leave the Blackberry world…or why I chose to do it when I did. Was it the recurring tiny black clock (say that 5 times fast) of doom and the resulting bi-weekly battery pull? Was it the frustrating browser interface that constantly shifted essential parts of a webpage off the screen, never to be seen again? Was it the incredible lack of well-performing apps?
I don’t know. All I know is sometimes you just know when it’s time to move on…
And move on I did…to a shiny new white (I really wanted black but beggars can’t be choosers) iPhone 4s on the bMobile network. bMobile, being the consummate pain in the ass that it always is, didn’t spare me any stress trying to acquire this phone. First they had run out of Hotspot devices (which happened to be an essential part of the plan that I wanted) and couldn’t inform me when they would be restocking. As fate would have it, their authorized dealer Cellular Planet still had Hotspot devices (I found that out on my own, not through Bmobile’s less than helpful customer service reps) and I managed to get the last Hotspot and the last iPhone 4s available, it seemed, in the entire country.
Flaws with the Hotspot and the iPhone itself had me biting my nails for a week, wondering whether I’d made a huge mistake switching from my flawed but ever-loyal Blackberry Torch. Following the assistance of a wonderful bMobile technician (they do exist) who went to no ends to get me a new functioning Hotspot, and after scouring the Apple forums to solve the issue of iMessage and push notification failure, I finally was able to settle in and see what all the Apple fuss is about.
iPhone has, in short, revolutionized the way I look at mobile phones. Don’t get me wrong…I’m no Apple fan-girl. I’m not a loyalist to any particular operating system or brand of phone – there are some designs and brands I’d be reluctant to choose (like Sony Ericsson, ew) but for the most part I’m relatively open-minded. iPhone has shown me that phones can have functions that extend far beyond their instant messaging service. Basically I have always taken it for granted that my phone was more than just a device I could use to message other people…it’s an organizational and functional tool. Applications can really influence the way you carry about your business on a day to day basis. For example, I keep track of my expenses using Evernote and Mint, and will eventually (when the thought of checking how much money I *actually* spend doesn’t make me wee myself) use that to come up with a budget I can follow. I use Flipboard to keep track of news, articles and snippets from the web, revolving around my interests like Design, Style, Politics, Architecture, etc. For the most part they pull articles at random, but I can also sync my Google Reader account and have my specific blogs and sites just a flip away. The TED app gives me access to the video and audio files from various TED talks, an incredible resource if you’re just looking for a constructive way to pass the time. I haven’t fully explored that particular app yet but in theory, it’s brilliant. I‘ve begun to warm to the idea of sharing my life in pictures and naturally Instagram is the go-to application for that. I’m not a natural shutterbug…oddly enough since I own a vast array of cameras; but the camera on the iPhone 4s is so good I don’t have an excuse not to take photos on a regular basis now. I won’t go into detail on the games…just know that Temple Run and Fruit Ninja have consumed my life and there is no coming back…
There are a number of other less popular apps I won’t go into, like the ambient noise app I downloaded to put me to sleep at night and the flashlight app that saves my life at 2am.
Apps aside, and apart from the amazing camera I spoke about earlier, the browser on this phone is a million times better than the browser on Blackberry. Like…no contest.

At first I loathed the idea of an on screen keyboard, even with my Torch I used the physical keyboard exclusively to type. But I will say that transitioning to the on screen keyboard has been seamless, pretty much...auto correct makes it a lot easier for you to type quickly and while there is the inevitable faux pas due to colloquial words and expressions, the phone eventually 'remembers' your commonly used terms like 'allyuh' and 'lime' and stops correcting it in appropriate context. One you get the hang of dismissing suggested corrections, it's pretty easy to get your message typed quickly and effectively.

It’s just a really easy, manageable phone and I’m really happy with the transition.
Now I’m fully aware that you can get the same functionality out of an Android phone. I haven’t delved deeply into the negative elements of Android, or iOs for that matter. The worst thing I’ve noticed about this phone is that the iTunes store is incredibly restricting when it comes to purchasing outside of your region, or even utilizing gift cards purchased outside of your region. I have to jump through a lot of hoops to get what I want sometimes, and that’s pretty annoying. Android strikes me as a little less secure by way of viruses etc but I assume that there are ways to prevent infections as much as possible. But I think a lot of apps I pay for on the iPhone are actually free for Android (at least they’re free on my Android tablet). Aesthetically I’m yet to find an Android phone I like as much as the relatively more compact iPhone design. Big phones don’t suit me. I have small hands.
Giving up Blackberry Messenger has been the only real challenge in the whole process…of course; it was the only thing the Blackberry was good for. Whats App suffices although not everyone I want to speak to has jumped on the Whats App train, like my little brother, for example. I do miss being able to pick up on the latest bacchanal through BBM statuses and pictures, and I do miss the access it gives me to a large number of people (mainly for promotional purposes) but when I really think about it, that’s a small sacrifice to make for a phone that can basically change my life. Ok..maybe I’m exaggerating. It can make my life a little easier, a little more organized, and a little less swearing at the tiny rotating…always rotating clock of death.
So if you’re considering the leap…close your eyes, take a deep, deep breath, and jump. The landing is soft…and has a considerably less shitty browser.

The case I eventually ended up with...for now

PS. I really don't advise getting this phone unless you have constant access to wifi. the iPhone running on Edge alone is an incredibly frustrating process...and it in no way reflects the true potential of this device. I was fortunate to get one of the last Hotspots on the island. If bMobile doesn't restock soon then I advise calling around to authorised dealers and trying your luck.

March [Excitement]

March has been a month of planning for me...planning, no doing just yet, but I'm going through the process... :)
New hair is on the horizon and I'm soon going to be booking an appointment with one Ms Candace St Cyr to colour my hair.
Now the last time I added any kind of chemical was when I was about 17 years old, fresh out of high school and trying to be funky - I dyed the bottom half of my hair blonde. Lol. It seemed like a good idea then.
Now I'm opting to colour again, rather than do any drastic cuts, since I've spent so long growing my hair I'm not quite ready to part with it just yet. Ombre is my choice of colour (effect?). I mean, it's probably more bleaching than it actually is colouring. Some of my favourite starlets and bloggers have an ombre in their hair and while I'm still not 100% sold that it's right for me, I'm willing to take the plunge:

I'm also getting back into my Konadicure swing. For those of you who aren't familiar, Konad is this nail art technique using stamps and plates with patterns etched into them. It's pretty simple and easy to do at home and costs much less than going to the salon. Here are some examples of what you can do with a Konad set.

In addition to Konadicures, I'm also going to experiment with ombre nail polish. Basically just a gradient of colour along the nail (some people also interpret it as a gradient of colour from finger to finger). I haven't been able to nail this yet so it's still a work in progress. If I'm successful I will post pics.

Last but not least - actually, it's probably the thing I am MOST excited about - is my impending switch from my trusty old Blackberry, over to the iPhone. Basically I've just gotten tired of the Blackberry interface and I think I'd like to try something new. The iPhone is marketed like a personal assistant, especially with the addition of Siri with the 4S. I've been looking up apps like a woman possessed and I'm pretty excited by the notion that I can be better organized with this phone. Also, there's Instagram and an 8MP camera, what more could a hipster need? Of course losing BBM will be a hard pill to swallow but there's WhatsApp and in the long run, I may appreciate the unclogging of my communications network. Strip it down to the bare minimum and proceed from there. Who knows? I anticipate more and more relevant persons migrating soon to non-RIM platforms in any case, some to Android, some to iOS as well, so maybe we'll all end up in the WhatsApp pool.
I've already decided on my primary iPhone case and I'm still hunting around for a nice wristlet to use on days when I'm not lugging around a handbag.

C'est tout for now...but I really will try to post here more often...I've been slacking in a big way.

Besss Carnival Compilation

Scorch does some of THE BEST events year round. Christopher Guinness compiled an amazing video of the best Scorch events throughout Carnival, culminating with a pump through Tribe Mas Band with Hoppy (the main man behind Scorch) et al. If you've never experienced Trinidad or its Carnival, this video should give you a pretty good idea of what you've been missing out on. Beautiful people, amazing vibes and too much alcohol (ha! no such thing).

My Top 10 Travel Essentials

My friend and super travel bug Malou over at Skip to Malou recently posted her Top 10 Travel Essentials and I thought it might be fun to do my own. I mean some things are standard Travel essentials: cameras, ipods, etc but there are some things I literally do not board a plane without, especially on those trans-Atlantic flights I used to take between home and University in the UK. I won't be making that trek any time in the near future but I still love thinking about travelling, and how I used to prepare for my long haul and EU trips (mostly to Holland). Find my top ten travel necessities below.

1. Travel Necessities: Sleep Mask, Earplugs, Neck Pillow 2. Travel Adapter - indispensable for travelling through Europe 3. Comfortable attire: Leggings or Jeggings & Cardigan 4. My usual choice of travel bag is the spacious Cole Haan Denney 5. Kindle to cut down on the bulk of books 6. Magazines - nothing distracts from turbulence like fashion on glossy paper 7. Blackberry Torch - must remember to turn my roaming on 8. Camera: depending on my destination either my Canon Rebel XTi or my more compact Canon Powershot 9. iTouch - for the occasional music and 'Guess the Flag' game 10. Comfortable shoes that are easy to slip off and on - flats or TOMS

January [Excitement]

I think I'd like to list some of the things that I'm very excited about for this month of January. I mean, a lot of things interest me, but there are a few things that I will probably follow up on in the weeks to come because they've peaked my excitement. Here are a few of the [random] things for January that have me wound up:

The Daphne Guinness Collection for MAC

This was actually released last month in the United States but MAC Trinidad recently sent out an email teasing for it, which means it should drop in Trinidad branches some time this month. I'm a fan of earth tones and a smokey eye so the pigments are very intriguing to me. My go-to beauty blog Temptalia rated the eyeshadow quad pretty poorly so I won't bother to snag that, plus I've already built my own palette with similar colours.
Here is a look at the pigments that I will probably be getting:

Aurora

Circa Plum

Nebula

All photos are credited to Temptalia. Take a look at the review of the pigments here and the video review of most of the collection here.

Jason Wu + Target

My experience with Target Designer collaborations has been in flux. One I was extremely excited for: Mulberry + Target was a huge let down in my opinion and the opinion of a few bloggers that I follow. However, I know the Missoni + Target collab shut down the retail giant's website and cleared the shelves in store. I'm optimistic that the Jason Wu + Target collaboration will have the same effect, since the collection's Lookbook has me all antsy.
My go-to for fashion news, Fashionising says the following of the collection:

"As far as designer / high street collaborations go, Jason Wu for Target is a winner. The 2012 collection is prim without being stuffy, ladylike with a flare of 1960s retro-chic, yet basic enough to come with the promise of wearability. There’s little to fault in the vintage-inspired prints, full pleated skirts, and straight-cut minidresses.
The accessories have a similar appeal to the clothes: woven handbags and kitty-print scarves are the kind that would add a dollop of retro sweetness to the simplest of outfits."

Word is that the prices will range from $19.99 to $59.99 which is amazing considering the aesthetic of this collection. Here are a few of my favourite looks and items:

I'm hoping to be able to grab a few things on the website...though that didn't go so well the last time I tried with Mulberry. Check out the whole collection here.

Matthew Williamson Pre-Autumn/Fall '12

Holy crap do I love this collection. Like...I would wear every look barring [maybe] two and that's rare for me to say. I've said that only about Balmain S/S '12 collection to date. The bold prints and bright colours are signature Williamson but his designs have evolved...a few beautifully structured pieces, heavily beaded clutches with fox tail adornments, sleek and sexy evening gowns. I mean, Williamson has always done sexy well but his hand seemed heavier in this collection, it's a mature sexy, a career woman sexy.
Check out a few of my favourites from this collection:
